It has been over 30 years since the beginning of efforts to improve diversity in academia. We can identify four major stages: (1) early and continuing efforts to diversify the pipeline by increasing numbers of women and minorities getting advanced degrees, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); (2) requiring academic institutions to develop their own "affirmative action plans" for hiring and promotion; (3) introducing mentoring programs and coping strategies to help…

Factors Contributing to the Success of NIH-Designated Underrepresented Minorities in Academic and Nonacademic Research Positions
TLDR
Analysis of the survey results suggests that taking diverse approaches toward underrepresented minorities is critical for ensuring that all of the most creative minds have an equal opportunity to contribute to realizing the authors' national research goals and diversified workforce.
Barriers to Career Success for Minority Researchers in the Behavioral Sciences
The United States falls short in the diversity of its scientific workforce. While the underrepresentation of minority researchers in the behavioral sciences has been a concern for several decades,
Building a Networked Improvement Community: Lessons in Organizing to Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
TLDR
Among the many lessons learned through this community case study, analyzing and addressing failed strategies is as equally important to a healthy NIC as is sharing learning from successful interventions.
Rank Equity Index: Measuring Parity in the Advancement of Underrepresented Populations in Academic Medicine.
TLDR
The Rank Equity Index -adapted from the Executive Parity Index, a scale previously implemented within the business sector- is developed to examine national data on gender and racial/ethnic equity across faculty ranks to provide AMCs with a new tool to better analyze institutional data to inform efforts to increase parity across all faculty ranks.
