Cadherins are multidomain adhesion proteins whose interactions direct cell sorting during histogenesis. They determine cell adhesion specificity, but prior studies failed to identify physical differences that could underlie cell sorting. These single molecule studies identify kinetic and strength differences between different cadherins.
