Levetiracetam is a new antiepileptic drug (AED) devoid of anticonvulsant activity in the two classic screening models for AEDs, the maximal electroshock and pentylenetetrazol seizure tests in both mice and rats. This contrasts a potent seizure suppression in genetic and kindled mice and rats and against chemoconvulsants inducing partial seizures in rats.
