A study was made of Portuguese who had, been injected with the radioactive contrast medium “Thorotrast” between 1930 and 1955; a control population matched for age and sex but injected with a non-radioactive contrast medium served for comparison. The study showed a gross excess, primarily in the liver, of the nearly “thorotrast specific” haemangioendotheliomata; there were a large number of other “local” lesions and tumours at the site of thorotrast injection and retention. Two and possibly… Expand

CALCULATION OF RADIATION DOSE FROM THOROTRAST USING WHOLE‐BODY GAMMA‐RAY SPECTRAL DATA *
TLDR
While considerable data on long-term effects of internally-deposited material in man has been obtained from the study of radium case, an epidemiological study on thorotrast patients is still highly desirable as it makes possible a study of the effects of various parameters on retention and effect. Thorotrast has been used in Denmark since 1932, and its use increased up till 1947 when it quite suddenly was discontinued. Apart from one patient with an intraarticular injection, and one recentlyExpand
LATE EFFECTS OF THOROTRAST ON THE LIVER AND SPLEEN, AND THEIR EFFERENT LYMPH NODES *
TLDR
Colloidal thorium dioxide (thorotrast) was used in Portugal since 1930 as a radiological contrast medium and the pathological alterations found in the liver and the spleen of the patients systematically injected are related. Expand

TLDR
Thorotrast granulomas of the neck and malignant neoplasies developing on their edge constitute an important part of its side effects in countries like Portugal, where a great number of cerebral angiographies were performed with thorotrast. Expand

I think most investigators tentatively accept the hypothesis that radiation plays the dominant role, and this can be answered without much ambiguity by the sorts of animal experiments now underway and to be described here by others. Expand
