  • In his famous Letters upon the Aesthetic Education, the German poet, playwright and philosopher suggested as early as 1795 that self-conscience, and therefore also liberty and morality, originated in play. In short, that “man only plays when in the full meaning of the word he is a man, and he is only completely a man when he plays.”
