Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, it is a privilege to deliver the John Wayne Lecture in Clinical Research. When asked to deliver this lecture, it gave me time to reflect on 30 years of clinical research. Of great concern, however, was how to make it interesting and how to make it sequential.
