The legendary 'Ciudad Blanca' of Honduras was first referred to under the name Xucutaco by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes already in 1526. Located in the remote, impenetrable and incompletely mapped rainforest of the Mosquito Coast, it was never conquered by the Spanish. With the time, it was slowly abandoned and forgotten. Two JERS-1 and one ERS-2 SLC Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images have been used to identify and to locate the lost city, a task made difficult due to the thick…
Geomorphological Insights on Human-Volcano Interactions and Use of Volcanic Materials in Pre-Hispanic Cultures of Costa Rica through the Holocene
Critical Zones in tropical environments, especially near active volcanoes, are rich in resources such as water, food and construction materials. In Central America, people have lived near volcanic

The dreaming quipucamayoq: Myth and landscape in Wilson Harris' The Dark Jester
In Wilson Harris' novel The Dark Jester conquistador history in the Americas and Andean and Buddhist myths are circulated in a type of quipu, a pre-colonial Incan narrative constructed from knotted
LiDAR as a tool for archaeological research: a case study
Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a technology that offers the ability to create highly detailed digital terrain models (DTMs) that expose low relief topographic features. The
Radargrammetry helps fight hunger in Ethiopia
This paper reports the operational implementation of radargrammetry for the production of Digital Elevation Models, or DEMs, to areas of rugged topography. The Southern Ethiopian Highlands east of

Speckle and scene spatial statistical estimators for SAR image filtering and texture analysis: some applications to agriculture, forestry, and point targets detection
Most of the processing/analysis tools for SAR images, and particularly the most usual speckle filters, are based on the use of first order local statistics (local mean and local variance). In order
Bayesian filtering of multichannel SAR images for detection of thin structures and data fusion
TLDR
Two new Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori vector speckle filters are developed for multi-channel detected SAR images and show that these filters present convincing performances for Speckle reduction, as well as for texture preservation and for small and/or thin scene objects detection.
Control-systems principles applied to speckle filtering and geophysical information extraction in multichannel SAR images
Two new Bayesian Maximum A Posterior vector speckle filters are developed for multi-channel detected synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. These filters incorporate statistical descriptions of the
Structure detection and statistical adaptive speckle filtering in SAR images
TLDR
In this paper it is shown that the filtering process can be controlled both by the coefficient of variation and by various geometrical ratio detectors, which allow the use of large window sizes for better speckle reduction while preserving spatial resolution and structural features.

TLDR
This paper presents the development and evaluation of a visual texture feature extraction method based on a stochastic field model of texture involving autocorrelation function measurement of a texture field, combined with histogram representation of a statistically decorrelated version of the texture field.

Maximum-entropy methods for despeckling and resampling synthetic aperture radar images of rough terrain
SAR systems, like any coherent imaging system, are subject to (I) speckling effects, which considerably reduce the useful detail within the acquired scenes and (II), strong geometric distortions.
