A 12-state study by the Joint Program for the Study of Abortion (JPSA) confirms that late abortion is 3 to 4 times more risky than early abortion. The major complication rate per 100 abortion patients was .8 for abortions less than 12 weeks and 2.5 for abortions more than 13 weeks. First trimester abortions seemed to be safer after 8 weeks gestation. Complications in second trimester abortions were less after 16 weeks.
