The binding of lectins to cell surfaces can cause transmissions of signals. They may increase the efficiency of processes of absorption at the cell membranes for different ingredients of the cell metabolism (vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids, amino acids) (Thalmann 1991). As a model, the effect of the galactoside-specific mistletoe lectin on the consumption of nutritive ingredients is exemplified, because it has potential value in tumor therapy (Gabius et al. 1991, 1992).
