Abstract In order to find out whether either of two heat exchangers in a nitric acid plant was leaking, the radioactive tracer 41 Ar was injected at the inlet of the high pressure side of the exchangers and detectors were placed at the outlet of the low pressure side. In an attempt to eliminate radiation scattering effects and to lower the detection limit, a measuring procedure according to the two-detector method was followed.
