The main purposes of this article are to uncover interesting features in real-world citationnetworks, and to highlight important substructures. In particular, it applies lattice theory tocitation analysis. On the applied side, it shows that lattice substructures exist in real-word citationnetworks. It is further shown that, through its relations with co-citations and bibliographiccoupling, the diamond (a four-element lattice) is a basic structural element in citation analysis. Finally, citation…
Co-citation, bibliographic coupling and a characterization of lattice citation networks
TLDR
This article introduces the head and tail order relations and study some of their properties and comes to a characterization of lattices, called the l - property, which is directly applicable to citation analysis.
BRS-compactness in networks: Theoretical considerations related to cohesion in citation graphs, collaboration networks and the internet
Compactness as introduced by Botafogo, Rivlin and Shneiderman, in short: BRS-compactness, is studied in general, as it can be used to describe the cohesion of parts of the internet or collaboration
Identifying research themes with weighted direct citation links
In this study direct citations are weighted with shared references and co-citations in an attempt to decompose a citation network of articles on the subject of library and information science. The
A Semantic Representation of the Citation Structure
TLDR
This short paper presents and discusses selected structures of citations and considers their meaning and possible application.
Social network analysis: a powerful strategy, also for the information sciences
TLDR
The growth of SNA is documented and a co-author network of S NA is drawn, and centrality measures of the SNA network are calculated.
Exploring Citation-Based Knowledge Flow in Scientific Research
TLDR
The citation-based knowledge flows among research elements such as researcher, paper, publication venue and research topic are studied for promoting the knowledge sharing and evaluation in the scientific research.
Comparative study on methods of detecting research fronts using different types of citation
TLDR
Direct citation, which could detect large and young emerging clusters earlier, shows the best performance in detecting a research front, and co-citation shows the worst, which suggests that the content similarity of papers connected by direct citations is the greatest and that direct citation networks have the least risk of missing emerging research domains.
How socially connected are citers to those that they cite?
TLDR
An investigation into the social and citation networks of three information scientists found to cite widely outside their immediate social connections indicates a positive correlation between social closeness and citation counts.
a Measure for the Cohesion of Weighted Networks
A generalization of both the Botafogo-Rivlin-Shneiderman compactness measure and the Wiener index is presented. These new measures for the cohesion of networks can be used in case a dissimilarity
Application of graph theory in the library domain—Building a faceted framework based on a literature review
  • A. Lüschow
  • Computer Science
Journal of Librarianship and Information Science
  • 2021
TLDR
The goal is to provide both researchers and libraries with a standard tool to classify scientific work, at the same time allowing for the identification of previously underrepresented areas where future research might be productive.

Co-citation in the scientific literature: A new measure of the relationship between two documents
  • H. Small
  • Computer Science
    J. Am. Soc. Inf. Sci.
  • 1973
TLDR
A new form of document coupling called co-citation is defined as the frequency with which two documents are cited together, and clusters of co- cited papers provide a new way to study the specialty structure of science.
Search strategy, construction and use of citation networks, with a socio-scientific example: "Amorphous semi-conductors and S.R. ovshinsky"

TLDR
Following the construction and assessment of a network describing the development of amorphous semiconductors, it is concluded that citation diagrams are a valuable aid for socio-scientific studies.
Citation Indexes in Sociological and Historical Research
The use of citation data in the computer construction of historical network diagrams is proposed. A new ‘critical path method’ of evaluating the impact of individual scientific discoveries is
Using Hypertext Metrics to Measure Research Output Levels
Two common ways to measure the "output" of a researcher (or research group) are to count numbers of publications and to count the citations (references to these publications in publications of
Graph structure in the Web
TLDR
The study of the web as a graph yields valuable insight into web algorithms for crawling, searching and community discovery, and the sociological phenomena which characterize its evolution.
Structural analysis of hypertexts: identifying hierarchies and useful metrics
TLDR
This paper proposes several authoring tools, based on hypertext structure analysis, that provide a multifaceted view of the hypertext, which should allow authors to reduce undesired structural complexity and create documents that readers can traverse more easily.
Citation Indexing and Evaluation of Scientific Papers
TLDR
An increased awareness of the usefulness of citation indexing as a tool for retrieval and evaluation will make this aspect of refereeing more important, and what now passes for minor carelessness or discourtesy could easily come to be regarded as serious malpractice.
The Gozinto theorem: Using citations to determine influences on a scientific publication
TLDR
Taking into account both the publications that have a direct influence and those that have an indirect influence, the total influence measure on a fixed paper is obtained.
Bibliographic coupling between scientific papers
TLDR
The population of papers under study was ordered into groups that satisfy the stated criterion of interrelation and an examination of the papers that constitute the groups shows a high degree of logical correlation.
Mining the Web's Link Structure
TLDR
Clever is a search engine that analyzes hyperlinks to uncover two types of pages: authorities, which provide the best source of information on a given topic; and hubs, which provides collections of links to authorities.
