Objective: This paper's first objective is to determine whether motor priming assistance (consisting of directional steering wheel vibrations) can be of some benefit compared with more traditional auditory (lateralized sound) or vibratory (symmetric steering wheel oscillation) warning devices. We hypothesize that warning devices favor driving situation diagnosis, whereas motor priming can improve the initiation of action even further. Another objective is to assess the possible benefits of…

Objective and subjective assessment of warning and motor priming assistance devices in car driving
This paper deals with moderately intrusive driving assistance devices that intervene when lane departure is imminent. A previous simulator study (Navarro et al., 2007) showed that motor priming
Can drivers modulate the effect of a motor priming assistance device during lane departure
TLDR
In some cases, due to shorter reaction times, the duration of lateral excursions was reduced even with the invalid cue, which suggests a modulation of the effect of MP by higher levels of cognitive control.
Lateral control support for car drivers: a human-machine cooperation approach
Motivation -- This paper is based on a research project which examines the way car drivers and automated devices cooperate to achieve lateral control of a vehicle. A theoretical classification of
Lateral control support for car drivers: a human-machine cooperation approach
TLDR
Initial results suggest that a motor priming device (asymmetric steering wheel vibrations) is more effective than more traditional warning devices and some negative behavioural adaptation occurs when a car's lateral position is fully controlled.
Influence of risk expectation on haptically cued corrective manoeuvres during near lane departure
TLDR
Results showed that corrective manoeuvres following directional pulses on the steering wheel (motor priming) are modulated by risk expectation, which may be of interest for designers of haptics-based automation such as lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance systems.
Tactile stimulations and wheel rotation responses: toward augmented lane departure warning systems
TLDR
How basic approaches in Cognitive Science may benefit to Human Factors Engineering and ultimately improve man-machine interfaces is illustrated and how initial learning can affect interference effects is shown.

TLDR
Evidence is found that within this scenario, errors in such a warning signal can have a negative effect on the behavior of the driver within the conditions studied, and this problem in the context of advanced automobile interfaces is studied.
A High Performance/Low-Cost Mini Driving Simulator Alternative for Human Factor Studies
TLDR
The architecture of the simulator is introduced and the designed steering-wheel haptic feedback system is described, and the various possible uses of the tool are discussed, which are a good compromise between performance and cost.
Dynamically deployed support as a potential solution to negative behavioral adaptation
TLDR
It is proposed that driver assistance is dynamically varied within predetermined safety limits, and the aim of employing a dynamic assistance policy is to prevent the driver from noticing a constant improvement in vehicle handling.
Speed Choice and Steering Behavior in Curve Driving
The relation between speed choice and steering performance during curve negotiation was studied in a driving simulator. The hypothesis was that curve radius and steering competence both affect

TLDR
It is demonstrated that adding automation through haptic display can be used not only to improve performance on a primary task but also to reduce perceptual demands or free attention for a secondary task.

TLDR
The state of the art on cognitive cooperation to extend an individual cognitive architecture is reviewed and a theoretical approach that could be relevant to evaluate cooperation and to design assistance in diverse domains such as air traffic control or aircraft piloting is considered.
