BACKGROUND Volatile oils from fresh roots, stems, leaves and seeds of Piper klotzschianum (Piperaceae) were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. In total, 25 components, representing more than 95% of the examined oils, were identified. The essential oils were evaluated against Artemia salina Leach nauplii and fourth-instar Aedes aegypti larvae. RESULTS The major chemical constituents that were identified from various parts of this plant were 1-butyl-3,4… Expand
Composition and biological activities of the essential oil of Piper corcovadensis (Miq.) C. DC (Piperaceae).
TLDR
Bioassays against larvae of the Dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti) revealed that leaf oil possessed larvicidal activities and are able to interfere with the activity of proteases from L4 gut enzymes. Expand
Antitumor and Aedes aegypti Larvicidal Activities of Essential Oils From Piper klotzschianum, P. hispidum, and P. arboreum
The chemical constituents of essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from Piper klotzschianum, P. hispidum, and P. arboreum, collected from the remaining Atlantic forest in Sergipe State, wereExpand
Chemical Analysis of Essential Oils of Piper laosanum and Piper acre (Piperaceae) from Vietnam
Abstract The essential oils obtained from the hydrodistillation of the leaves and stems of Piper laosanum C. DC. and Piper acre Blume (Piperaceae) were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gasExpand
Essential oils and their compounds as Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) larvicides: review
TLDR
It is revealed that the essential oils are effective alternatives for the production of larvicides, which can be used in vector-borne disease control programmes. Expand
Essential Oils from Neotropical Piper Species and Their Biological Activities
TLDR
There are many reports of Piper EOs as antimicrobial agents, antiprotozoal, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activity against different tumor cells lines (breast, leukemia, melanoma, gastric, among others), which can contribute to the rational and economic exploration of Piper species, once they have been identified as potent natural and alternative sources to treat human diseases. Expand
Chemical Composition and Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activity of Essential Oils from Piper Species.
TLDR
The essential oils (EOs) derived from aromatic plants such as Piper species are considered to play a role in alleviating neuronal ailments that are associated with inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and sesquiterpenes and phenylpropanoids were found to be rich in these EOs. Expand
High efficacy of (Z)-γ-bisabolene from the essential oil of Galinsoga parviflora (Asteraceae) as larvicide and oviposition deterrent against six mosquito vectors
TLDR
The oviposition deterrent potential of the G. parviflora EO and (Z)-γ-bisabolene was studied on six mosquito vectors, showing that 25 μg/ml of (Z), led to an Oviposition Activity Index lower of − 0.79 in all tested mosquito vectors. Expand
Larvicidal Activity of Essential Oils From Piper Species Against Strains of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Resistant to Pyrethroids
TLDR
P Piper's EOs should be further evaluated as a potential larvicide, against strains resistant to currently used pesticides, and the identification of phenylpropanoids and monoterpenes as the active compounds open the possibility to study their mechanism of action. Expand
Larvicidal activity of essential oils against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).
TLDR
OEs are promising alternatives for the investigation of natural, ecologically correct and biodegradable insecticides with the potential to be used in Ae. Expand

TLDR
P. gaudichaudianum essential oil significantly increased lipid peroxidation at doses of 0.5 microg/mL and higher, suggesting that the observed oxidant potential can be responsible, at least in part, for its cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. Expand
