Philyra globosa (Fabricius) larvae were reared at 28 ± 1° C in water of salinity 30 ± 1‰. They passed through 3 zoeal and one megalopal stage before moulting to the first crab. The intermoult period of zoea I, II, III and the megalopa was 2, 2, 3 and 4 days, respectively. Overall development took eleven days. The morphological characters of laboratory-reared P. globosa larvae are compared with Chhapgar's (1955) brief description of larvae obtained from the plankton and other known Philyra spp…

The hypothesis that the subfamily Ebaliinae is a heterogeneous group is supported, as the complete larval development of the crab Ilia nucleus reared under laboratory conditions was obtained.
Zoeal stages of Hiplyra variegata (Rüppell, 1830) (Crustacea: Brachyura: Leucosiidae) reared in the laboratory and collected from plankton at Al-Kharrar creek, central Red Sea

The zoeal stages of Hiplyra variegata are described and illustrated for the first time and it is important to note that the third zoea of H.variegata has four small spines at each posterolateral margin of the carapace, in contrast to three spines in other species.
Keys and bibliography for the identification of zoeal stages of brachyuran crabs from the Western Indian Ocean
- Biology
- 2018
Approximately 430 brachyuran species have been identified as inhabiting the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), of which only 125 species have full or partial larval descriptions available, and zoeal characters compared, in order to assess diagnostic characters for their identification.

No evidence is provided for the inclusion of the Leucosiidae in a distinct oxystomatous group along with the dorippids and calappids, and the leucosiids appear to be highly evolved catometopous crabs.
