In the first part of these lectures we will review the main aspects of large N QCD and the explicit results obtained from it. Then, after a review of the properties of N=4 super Yang-Mills, type IIB string theory and of AdS space, we briefly discuss the Maldacena conjecture. Finally in the last part of these lectures we will discuss the finite temperature case and we show how "hadronic" quantities as the string tension, the mass gap and the topological susceptibility can be computed in this…

Lattice gauge theories and the AdS / CFT correspondence

This is the write-up of a set of lectures on the comparison between Lattice Gauge Theories and AdS/CFT results for the non-perturbative behaviour of non-supersymmetric Yang Mills theories. These

Large N field theories from superstrings

These are introductory lectures on the correspondence between SU(N) gauge theories and Superstring Theory in anti-de Sitter geometries (AdS). The subject combines a number of different topics,

Generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence

We consider generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which probe branes are embedded in gravity backgrounds dual to either conformal or confining gauge theories. These correspond to defect

theta dependence of SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a topological term

Abstract We review results concerning the θ dependence of 4D S U ( N ) gauge theories and QCD, where θ is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we

This chapter gives a pedagogical review of the holographic duality between string theory and quantum field theory. The main focus is on the duality of maximally supersymmetric Yang–Mills gauge theory

Introductory lectures on string theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence

The first lecture is of a qualitative nature. We explain the concept and the uses of duality in string theory and field theory. The prospects to understand QCD, the theory of the strong interactions,

Wilson loop and dimensional reduction in noncommutative gauge theories

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we study UV behavior of Wilson loops in various noncommutative gauge theories. We get an area law in most cases and try to identify its origin. In D3 case, we may

The 4D SU(3) gauge theory with an imaginary θ term

A bstractWe study the scaling behavior of the 4D SU(3) lattice gauge theory in the presence of a θ term, by Monte Carlo simulations computing the topological properties at imaginary θ. The numerical

Aspects of Noncommutativity and Holography in Field Theory and String Theory

This thesis addresses two topics: noncommutative Yang-Mills theories and the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the first part we study a partial summation of the theta-expanded perturbation theory. The

Topology in lattice QCD

The status of topology on the lattice is reviewed. Recent results show that the topological susceptibility chi can be unambigously determined. Different methods, if properly implemented, give results

Macroscopic strings as heavy quarks: Large-N gauge theory and anti-de Sitter supergravity

Abstract. We study some aspects of Maldacena's large-N correspondence between ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal gauge theory on the D3-brane and maximal supergravity on AdS$_5 \times S_5$ by introducing

The Holographic bound in anti-de Sitter space

The correspondence between string theory in Anti-de Sitter space and super Yang Mills theory is an example of the Holographic principle according to which a quantum theory with gravity must be

Particules et interactions : le modèle standard mis à l'épreuve : Les Houches, session LXVIII, 28 juillet - 5 septembre 1997 = Probing the standard model of particle interactions

Hardbound. The Standard Model (SM) of particle interactions, since its formulation in the early seventies, remains the only serious candidate theory describing three of the four forces of nature -
