Lanthanide elements typically exhibit a +III oxidation state (OS) in chemical compounds with a few in +IV or even +V OS. Although lanthanides with +II OS have been observed recently in organometallic compounds, +I OS is extremely rare. Using a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum theoretical study, we have found two low OS lanthanides in doped boron clusters, PrB3- and PrB4-. These two clusters are shown to have planar structures, in which the Pr atom is bonded to the aromatic boron…

Monovalent lanthanide(I) in borozene complexes
Lanthanide (Ln) elements are generally found in the oxidation state +II or +III, and a few examples of +IV and +V compounds have also been reported. In contrast, monovalent Ln(+I) complexes remain
Exceptionally Complex Electronic Structures of Lanthanide Oxides and Small Molecules.
TLDR
The results confirm that the partial 4fN subshell occupancy is largely preserved between molecular and bulk oxides and borides, and suggest that surfaces and edges of bulk materials may support a low-energy, diffuse Ln 6s band, in contrast to bulk interiors, in which the 6d band is destabilized relative to the 5d band.
Structure and Chemical Bonding in Medium-Size Boron Clusters Doped with Praseodymium.
After reports of unusually low oxidation states of lanthanide elements in Ln-B clusters and their inverse sandwich geometrical topologies, the interest shifted from boride clusters doped with
Expanded Inverse-Sandwich Complexes of Lanthanum Borides: La2B10- and La2B11.
TLDR
It is confirmed that the largest monocyclic boron ring to form the inverse-sandwich structures is B9 and insights into the structural evolutions of larger lanthanide boride clusters are provided.
High-resolution photoelectron imaging of MnB3 -: Probing the bonding between the aromatic B3 cluster and 3d transition metals.
TLDR
The bonding in MnB3 is compared with that in 5d MB3 clusters, where the strong metal-B3 interactions strongly change the structures and bonding in the B3 moiety.
NbB12-: a new member of half-sandwich type doped boron clusters with high stability.
TLDR
A fascinating NbB12- cluster is uncovered by the structural search, which shows robust stability and can be considered as a new member of the half-sandwich transition metal doped boron clusters.
Electronic and Molecular Structures of the CeB6 Monomer.
TLDR
The results suggest that edge and corner conductivity of the CeB6 molecular unit involves stabilized, highly diffuse 6s orbitals or bands rather than the bulk-favored 5d band.
Insights into the Structures and Bonding of Medium-Sized Cerium-Doped Boron Clusters.
TLDR
The neutral CeB14 cluster is identified as a magic cluster on the basis of its robust relative stability with respect to its neighbors and a large HOMO-LUMO gap and enhanced stability with strong delocalized π and δ bonding via interactions between the Ce 5d- and B 2p-AOs.
High-Resolution Photoelectron Imaging of IrB3 - : Observation of a π-Aromatic B3 + Ring Coordinated to a Transition Metal.
TLDR
This study provides the first example of a boron-to-metal charge-transfer complex and evidence of a π-aromatic B3 + ring coordinated to a transition metal.
Probing the electronic structure of the CoB16− drum complex: Unusual oxidation state of Co−1
Since the discovery of the first drum-like CoB $_{16}$ - complex, metal-doped drum-like boron nanotubular structures have been investigated with various metal dopants and different tubular size,

Pentavalent Lanthanide Compounds: Formation and Characterization of Praseodymium(V) Oxides.
TLDR
Combined infrared spectroscopic and advanced quantum chemistry studies show that the lanthanide oxide species PrO4 and PrO2 (+) complexes have the unprecedented Pr(V) oxidation state, thus demonstrating that the pentavalent state is viable for lanthanides elements in a suitable coordination environment.
Pentavalent lanthanide nitride-oxides: NPrO and NPrO- complexes with N≡Pr triple bonds.
TLDR
The neutral NPrO molecule is thus a rare lanthanide nitride-oxide species with a Pr(v) oxidation state, which follows the recent identification of the first Pr( v) oxidationState in the PrO2+ and PrO4 complexes, and indicates that lanthanides compounds with oxidation states of higher than +IV are richer in chemistry than previously recognized.
SmB6- Cluster Anion: Covalency Involving f Orbitals.
TLDR
A joint experimental photoelectron spectroscopic and theoretical study of the SmB6- anion, iso-stoichiometric to the smB6 solid-a topological Kondo insulator is reported, found to feature strong static and dynamic electron correlations and relativistic components, calling for treatment with CASPT2 and up sixth-order Douglass-Kroll-Hess (DKH) relativist correction.
PrB7- : A Praseodymium-Doped Boron Cluster with a PrII Center Coordinated by a Doubly Aromatic Planar η7 -B73- Ligand.
TLDR
The structure and bonding of a Pr-doped boron cluster (PrB7- ) are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemistry and a large energy gap is observed between the first and second detachment features, indicating a highly stable neutral PrB7 .
Observation of highly stable and symmetric lanthanide octa-boron inverse sandwich complexes
TLDR
A joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical study on two octa-boron di-lanthanide clusters found that these clusters form highly stable inverse sandwich structures, Ln2B8−, with strong Ln and B8 bonding via interactions between the Ln 5d orbitals and the delocalized σ and π orbitals on the B8 ring.
Oxidation states, geometries, and electronic structures of plutonium tetroxide PuO4 isomers: is octavalent Pu viable?
TLDR
It is shown here that no stable electronic homologue of octavalent RuO4 and OsO4 exists for PuO4, even though Pu has the same number of eight valence electrons as Ru and Os.
