Current methods of measurement of proprioceptive function depend on the ability to detect passive movement (kinaesthesia) or the awareness of joint position (joint position sense, JPS). However, reports of proprioceptive function in healthy and pathological joints are quite variable, which may be due to the different methods used. We have compared the validity of several frequently used methods to quantify proprioception. Thirty healthy subjects aged between 24 and 72 years underwent five…

Joint position reproduction and joint position discrimination at the ankle are not related
TLDR
Results show that for proprioception, scores from the three classical psychophysical methods for measuring sensitivity (adjustment, limits and constant stimuli) are not correlated with each other, which suggests that each proprioceptive measurement system assesses a different aspect of proprioceptions.
Reliability and Precision of Hip Proprioception Methods in Healthy Individuals
TLDR
Results indicate that a reliable and precise method of measuring hip TTDPM has been established and is related to hip kinematics, hip kinetics, and muscle activation about the hip during functional tasks.
Repeatability of joint proprioception and muscle torque assessment in healthy children and in children diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome.
TLDR
The repeatability of JK and muscle torque measurements was excellent in both healthy children and those with hypermobility syndrome, and the JPS test can only be assessed with poor to moderate repeatability.
Adaptive Staircase Measurement of Hand Proprioception
TLDR
A novel technique that applies psychometric adaptive staircase procedures to hand proprioception with a simple tablet-style apparatus that could easily be adapted for the clinic, and suggests that of the three methods, the adaptive staircase method yields the best test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, and construct validity.
Reproducibility of the measurement of knee joint proprioception in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
TLDR
In knee OA subjects and healthy subjects, knee proprioception measurement shows adequate intra- and interreliability, however, the absolute measurement error is rather high and has limited value in the assessment of individual subjects.
A Tablet-Based Tool for Accurate Measurement of Hand Proprioception After Stroke
TLDR
A tablet-based tool to measure static hand proprioception using an adaptive staircase procedure and the custom passive movement direction discrimination test (PMDD) may be useful with any level of proprioceptive impairment, and may be preferable if testing or clinician training time needs to be minimized, or pain or spasticity is present.
The Effect of a Neoprene Sleeve on Knee Joint Position Sense
TLDR
The findings of this study support the previous literature, which indicates that the application of a knee sleeve improves proprioceptive acuity and indicates that when testing proprioception acuity, a test battery should be used because of the limited correlation between any of the tests used.
Assessing Proprioceptive Function: Evaluating Joint Position Matching Methods Against Psychophysical Thresholds
TLDR
Comparison of position sense acuity between ipsilateral and contralateral matching methods against a psychophysical threshold method to establish the accuracy and relationships between these models revealed psychophysical thresholds to be the most precise and least variable acuity measure.
Mobile Phone-Based Joint Angle Measurement for Functional Assessment and Rehabilitation of Proprioception
TLDR
Smartphone applications are reliable for clinical measurements and are mainly used to assess ROM and JPS, however, there is lack of studies on Smartphone applications which can be used in an autonomous way to provide physical therapy exercises at home.

Age-related changes in proprioception and sensation of joint position.
TLDR
The existence of an age-related change in proprioception and static joint position sensation in women is suggested and provides a basis for further investigation of contributory factors of musculoskeletal trauma in the elderly.
Proprioception in the nearly extended knee. Measurements of position and movement in healthy individuals and in symptomatic anterior cruciate ligament injured patients.
TLDR
Information of passive movements in the nearly extended knee position was more sensitive towards extension than towards flexion in threshold tests and the sensitivity improved closer to full extension, which implies a logical joint protective purpose.
Joint proprioception in normal, osteoarthritic and replaced knees.
TLDR
It is proposed that reduced proprioception in elderly and osteoarthritic subjects may be responsible for initiation or advancement of degeneration of the knee.
Effect of age and activity on knee joint proprioception.
TLDR
It is found that proprioception is diminished with age and that regular activity may attenuate this decline, and the Penny and Giles electrogoniometer is a reproducible device for measuring knee joint angles in both young and elderly subjects.
Proprioception in the anterior cruciate deficient knee
TLDR
Proprioception was quantified in a group of patients who had documented complete ACL tears andMultivariate analysis demonstrated that changes recorded in the propriocep tion of the injured knee were attributable to the loss of the ACL rather than to other variables.
Effect of fatigue on joint position sense of the knee
TLDR
It is concluded that muscle receptors are a prominent, if not primary, determinant of joint position sense, and capsular receptors may have a secondary role.
The effects of muscle fatigue on and the relationship of arm dominance to shoulder proprioception.
TLDR
It is concluded that shoulder proprioception is diminished in the presence of shoulder muscle fatigue, suggesting clinical rehabilitation protocols must emphasize increasing muscular endurance.
Effect of reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament on proprioception of the knee and the heel strike transient
TLDR
Results indicate that a well done ACL reconstruction with appropriate rehabilitation can result in proprioception that is essentially equal to that of the contralateral limb.
Proprioception after an acute knee ligament injury: A longitudinal study on 16 consecutive patients
TLDR
A defect in proprioception has been found in selected patient groups that have an anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee at different times after the original injury and no significant defects were found during the first year in these consecutively studied patients.
The Role of Proprioception in the Management and Rehabilitation of Injuries
TLDR
Understanding of the effects of ligamentous injury, surgical intervention, and proprioceptively mediated activities in the rehabilitation program provides an understanding of the complexity of this system responsible for motor control.
