Bartonella species are pathogens of emerging and reemerging significance, causing a wide array of clinical syndromes. In North America and Europe, they are increasingly recognized as a cause of culture negative endocarditis, neuroretinitis, and disease among homeless, HIV-infected, and other immunosuppressed individuals.
