}The in vitro susceptibility to tobramycin of 1,466 bacterial isolates, including several genera and strains of common pathogenic gram-negative bacilli and Staphylococcus aureus, was determined by conventional serial dilution methods. Tobramycin exhibited marked in vitro antibacterial activity; almost all of the isolates tested were inhibited by less than or equal to 2.5 mug of the drug/ml. The antibiotic was used in the treatment of several types of infection in 29 patients with normal renal…

Tobramycin: an overview.
- BiologyThe Journal of infectious diseases
- 1976
Tobinycin, one of the newest aminoglycoside agents, is the subject of this review and much of the material presented herein will be concerned with a comparison of tobramycin and other am inoglycosides, since only in this context can one determine the proper role for this agent.
Cefotaxime is more effective than is ampicillin‐tobramycin in cirrhotics with severe infections
- Medicine, BiologyHepatology
- 1985
The results suggest that broad‐spectrum cephalosporins should be considered as first choice antibiotics in cirrhotic patients with severe infections.
Development of resistance during antibiotic therapy
- Medicine, BiologyEuropean Journal of Clinical Microbiology
- 2005
Emergence of resistance of the infecting organism was associated with therapeutic failure in about half of the cases with the exception of patients treated with aminoglycosides in whom development of resistance resulted in treatment failure in 85 % of the Cases.
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.
- Medicine, BiologyGut
- 1985
In a group of patients with severe alcoholic liver disease and SBP, ampieillin plus an aminocyclitol provided complete coverage, but the risk of nephrotoxicity was unacceptably high, and the earlier cephalosporins cannot be relied upon for the empiric treatment of SBP.

The clinical results were much better in urinary tract infections than in wound infections, pulmonary infections, septicemia, and meningitis, and the frequency of adverse reactions encountered in the present series was similar for both drugs.
In Vitro Studies of Tobramycin, an Aminoglycoside Antibiotic

Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which has excellent antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus, and many members of the Enterobacteriaceae. Most strains of Serratia,…
Evaluation of the in vitro activity of tobramycin as compared with that of gentamicin sulfate.
- Biology, MedicineApplied microbiology
- 1972
The in vitro activity of tobramycin was quantitatively compared with that of gentamicin sulfate against 195 bacterial isolates from clinical material and on the basis of the obtained data, the following criteria are proposed for the interpretation of diffusion susceptibility tests with 10-mug discs of Gentamicin and tobramYcin.

The in vitro antimicrobial activity of tobramycin and gentamicin was compared against 362 bacterial isolates, and tobramYcin was most effective at a neutral pH.

It is suggested that specific interaction of intracellular antibiotic with proteins of the 30S subunits allows repeated use of the ribosome cycle by such affected particles, but with selective misreading of certain amino acid codons as terminator codons, so that they produce incomplete polypeptide chains.
