Aphids cause great damage to cultivated crops. With lhe aim of aid managing methods, biological properties subject to heavy selection were studied in the three south Brazilian species Schizap/Us graminum, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosipltum padi (Homoptera: Aphididae). Changes in embryonic outer morphology were analysed under contrast phase microscope and eight stages were described. The embryonic period terminated after 20, 24 and 26 hours; lhe Iongevity (expressed in number of days from nymph…

Growth performance and feeding behaviour of Rhopalosiphum padi on rice (Prestasi tumbesaran dan tabiat pemakanan Rhopalosiphum padi pada padi)

It was confirmed that aphids are only able to ingest phloem sap (E2) even on a young plant for only 19.9% of the total 6 h feeding period, and it was found that they can only survive for 13 days on average.

Infestation and natural parasitism of aphids in single and mixed pastures of black oats and ryegrass

The mixture of heavily infested black oats with a poorly infested ryegrass resulted in reduction of aphid infestation in comparison with heavily-infested single plant species field, possible because the conditions are favorable for the development of parasitoid populations.

Transcriptomics analysis of phloem-feeding insect resistance in rice germplasm

This work began by understanding BPH feeding behaviour on 12 rice varieties with different resistance background using Electrical Penetration Graph and honeydew clock experiments, and undertook microarray analysis on all varieties to identify candidate genes which may contribute to resistance.

Host plant selection by migrant Rhopalosiphum padi in autumn and the occurrence of an intermediate morph

It is proposed that intermediates are a programmed component of the morph structure and have the potential to contribute to both the holocyclic and anholocyClic portions of the population.

Studies on the Feeding and Nutrition of Tuberolachnus Salignus (Gmelin) (Homoptera, Aphididae)

The sugar and nitrogen composition of the phloem sieve-tube sap ingested by Tuberolachnus salignus (Gmelin) feeding on Salix acutifolia stems is determined, and that of the honeydew excreted by the aphids is compared.
