Light control of plant development is most dramatically illustrated by seedling development. Seedling development patterns under light (photomorphogenesis) are distinct from those in darkness (skotomorphogenesis or etiolation) with respect to gene expression, cellular and subcellular differentiation, and organ morphology. A complex network of molecular interactions couples the regulatory photoreceptors to developmental decisions. Rapid progress in defining the roles of individual photoreceptors…

Structure and Function of the Phytochromes: Light Regulation of Plant Growth and Development
TLDR
This mini-review summarizes the gist of recent findings in deetiolation and suppression of shade avoidance response as classic examples of the phytochrome-mediated photomorphogenesis.
Suppressors of an Arabidopsis thaliana phyB mutation identify genes that control light signaling and hypocotyl elongation.
TLDR
Genetic analyses show that the shy (short hypocotyl) mutations the authors have isolated fall in several loci, which suggest that some of the genes identified have functions in control of light responses.

TLDR
Rapid progress in eukaryotic gene repression mechanisms in general, and light control of plant gene expression in particular, sheds new light on how a class of ten pleiotropic COP/DET/FUS genes might function to down‐regulate light‐inducible genes in plants.

TLDR
The light-dependent development of plants is a complex process involving the combined action of several photoreceptor systems, including the red/far-red light- absorption phytochromes, the blue/UV-A lightabsorbing cryptochromes, and distinct UV-A and UV-B light photoreceptors.

Plants sense many aspects of light in their environment, including its wavelength, duration, intensity, and direction. This information is used to optimize growth for the ambient light environment,
Light Control of Plant Development: A Role of the Ubiquitin/Proteasome-Mediated Proteolysis
TLDR
Current understanding of the role of the COP/DET/FUS proteins and the ubiquitin/proteasome-mediated proteolysis in the light control of Arabidopsis seedling development is summarized.
Regulation of flowering time by Arabidopsis photoreceptors.
TLDR
Analysis of flowering in cry2 and phyB mutants in response to different wavelengths of light indicated that flowering is regulated by the antagonistic actions of phy B and cry2.
Multiple light and plastid signals control chloroplast development in Arabidopsis
TLDR
The understanding of both types of light signals, and how they may related to the proposed plastid-originated signals are sought, using a combined genetic and molecular-physiological approach in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana.
Interplay between Light and Plant Hormones in the Control of Arabidopsis Seedling Chlorophyll Biosynthesis
TLDR
The integrators, such as PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORs, ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5, ETHYLENE INSENSTIVE 3 and DELLA proteins, are key transcription regulators in light or hormone signaling pathways and illustrates the regulatory networks of light and hormone interactions in chlorophyll biosynthesis.
Light Control of Arabidopsis Development Entails Coordinated Regulation of Genome Expression and Cellular Pathways
TLDR
It is found that light controls Arabidopsis development through coordinately regulating metabolic and regulatory pathways, and more than 26 cellular pathways that are regulated coordinately by light are revealed.

TLDR
A transient increase in the amount of mRNA for four nuclear genes encoding chloroplast proteins during early development of Arabidopsis thaliana is found, suggesting that this increase represents developmental regulation of these genes.
Arabidopsis mutants define downstream branches in the phototransduction pathway.
TLDR
Genetic and phenotypic analyses indicate that most of the mutations are recessive and define at least three loci (doc1, doc2, doc3), and all three doc mutations are much more specific in derepressing the expression of CAB.
Genetic interactions in plant photomorphogenesis
TLDR
Epistasis analyses support a pathway in which DET1 and DET2 are downstream effectors of phytochrome function, and Phenocopy of the de-etiolated mutants by cytokinin implicates a role for this hormone in promoting seedling photomorphogenesis.
A New Class of Arabidopsis Constitutive Photomorphogenic Genes Involved in Regulating Cotyledon Development.
TLDR
A new class of constitutive photomorphogenic (cop) mutants is identified, in which dark-grown seedlings have open and enlarged cotyledons resembling those of light-grown wild-type seedlings, suggesting that COP2, COP3, and COP4 may act downstream of phytochrome in the light regulatory pathway.
Phenotypic and Genetic Analysis of det2, a New Mutant That Affects Light-Regulated Seedling Development in Arabidopsis.
TLDR
The greening phenotypes produced by recessive mutations in a gene designated de-etiolated-2 (DET2) are described, implying that DET1 and DET2 function in distinct pathways that affect downstream light-regulated genes.
CUE1: A Mesophyll Cell-Specific Positive Regulator of Light-Controlled Gene Expression in Arabidopsis.
TLDR
It is proposed that CUE1 is a cell-specific positive regulator linking light and intrinsic developmental programs in Arabidopsis leaf mesophyll cells, because cue1 mutants are severely deficient at establishing photoautotrophic growth.
Differential usage of photoreceptors for chalcone synthase gene expression during plant development
TLDR
The apparent dependence of photoreceptor usage on the developmental state of the cell or organism was in accordance with observations on the photoregulation of fusion constructs between CHS promoters from parsley or mustard and the β-glucuronidase reporter gene (GUS).
