Although found worthy of inclusion in the authoritative Dictionary of Scientific Biography (1), the Norwegian physicist and physical chemist Lars Vegard (18801963) is not well known outside Scandinavia. His name in the history of science is primarily associated with his pioneering work in auroral research, an interdisciplinary area of science to which he made fundamental contributions (2).
