As part of a long‐term study on the biology and ecology of the intertidal kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory, we report on the occurrence of gall development on this alga, identified the possible causal agent, and assessed the extent of the phenomenon in two wild stands of the host. Our results showed that galls affecting natural populations of L. nigrescens were associated with the infection by a filamentous brown algal endophyte of the genus Laminariocolax. Assignment to Laminariocolax of the…

- BiologyEuropean Journal of Phycology

The results suggest that specific host-endophyte patterns could exist locally, as found in kelps in Brittany where all endophytes isolated from S. latissima were L. elsbetiae, and those isolated from Laminaria hyperborea were Laminariocolax atlanticus and L. aecidioides.
Different Early Responses of Laminariales to an Endophytic Infection Provide Insights About Kelp Host Specificity
- BiologyFrontiers in Marine Science

Results suggest that expression pattern differences between the two kelps related to the recognition of the endophyte and later defense reactions could explain the variability of observed physiological responses and host-endophyte specificity in kelp natural populations.

The differential presence of filamentous algal endophytes indicates that endophyte pathogenicity indirectly has greater effect on tetrasporophyte and unfertilized gametophytes than on the carposporophytes, which house the products of sexual recombination.
A highly prevalent filamentous algal endophyte in natural populations of the sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is not detected during cultivation in Northern Brittany

The results suggest that infections of cultivated S. latissima with the endophyte L. elsbetiae might be a minor problem in kelp farms in Northern Brittany if the seeding production is kept under controlled conditions without external contamination.

Major progresses have been done in recent years in characterizing some mechanisms of cross-talk involved in host specificity, the role of bacterial biofilms in mediating some interactions, as well as host defenses that impact the diversity of these associations through allelopathic interactions.
