The end of the 20th century has witnessed a tremendous development of biological disciplines, and, primarily, genetics. In recent years genetics has become a major field of biology. The focus of interest on genetics motivates publishing manuals, in which genetic information is presented in the form comprehensible for high school students, high school graduates, and college students. The necessity of such manuals is also caused by the scarcity of modern textbooks in genetics. In view of this, the development and publishing of manuals for high school students and graduates as well as for college students would promote in-depth mastering of genetic knowledge. On the basis of their teaching experience of many years, the authors of the manual L.N. Pesetskaya and G.G. Goncharenko included in it the following five sections: (1) Main rules of heredity; (2) Human genetics and pedigree analysis; (3) Population genetics, the Hardy– Weinberg law; (4) Molecular genetics; (5) Genetic engineering. Each section consists of a brief introduction, which enables students to directly pass to solving problems; standard problems with detailed solutions; and a wide range of problems for self-instruction provided with answers. In addition, each section includes specifically denoted problems of a more advanced level, which the authors recommend for academic tests and high-school Olympiads.
