Dans l’idee coloniale de l’Estado Novo portugais (1930-1974), l’Eglise catholique joua un role essentiel. Mais a l’inverse d’une idee courante, la christianisation des indigenes n’y fut pas un but en soi, elle constitua, d’abord, l’outil de leur « portugalisation » dans le cadre d’un nationalisme renouvele.
