In the last months the use of wood in Germany has been clearly increased. Wood from short rotation plantations of fast growing tree spe- cies (e. g. poplar and willows) can be an enlargement for the wood market. Base for an economic useful business of short rotation plantations are suf- ficient water and nutrient supply. If these conditions are fulfilled, positive profit contributions can be already obtained within a 4-years rotation.
Implementierung und bodenökologische Charakterisierung von Kurzumtriebsplantagen und Agroforstsystemen am Beispiel der Bioenergie-Regionen "Göttinger Land" & "Thüringer Ackerebene"
In the context of climate change and the decrease of fossil fuels the production of renewable energies should be extended. The use of biomass is one option to help secure the energy supply. Based onExpand
Potentials and impacts of short-rotation coppice plantation with aspen in Eastern Germany under conditions of climate change
Woody biomass generated in short-rotation coppice (SRC) plantations with aspen (Populus tremula L.) has good properties for bioenergy crop production: annual yields are high, labour input per year isExpand
Assessing the short rotation woody biomass production on marginal post-mining areas.
t he lusatian lignite-mining district ( eastern Germany) is characterized by a high share of marginal post-mining areas. At these sites, crop yield is generally low, and hence, conventional land useExpand
Bioenergy potential in Germany - assessing spatial patterns of biomass production with aspen short-rotation coppice
A b s t r a c t. The aim of this work is to provide policymakers with a tool to explore the actual and future energy potential of short-rotation coppice (SRC) in Germany. The ecophysiological modelExpand
Envisioning the sustainability of the production of short rotation coppice on grassland
BackgroundShort rotation coppices (SRC) offer a chance to enhance sustainable biomass production and to enlarge domestic wood resources. On arable land, SRC are less competitive in many regionsExpand
Alley Cropping with Short Rotation Coppices in the Temperate Region: A Land-use Strategy for Optimizing Microclimate, Soil Organic Carbon and Ecosystem Service Provision of Agricultural Landscapes
Conventional agricultural practices have been associated with negative effects, such as reduction of soil fertility, pollution of surface and groundwater and loss of biodiversity and ecosystemExpand
Ecological benefits provided by alley cropping systems for production of woody biomass in the temperate region: a review
In temperate Europe alley cropping systems which integrate strips of short rotation coppices into conventional agricultural fields (ACS) are receiving increasing attention. These systems can be usedExpand
Trade-Off between Energy Wood and Grain Production in Temperate Alley-Cropping Systems: An Empirical and Simulation-Based Derivation of Land Equivalent Ratio
TLDR
The objective of this combined experimental and simulation study was to assess the tree- and crop-yields and to derive the LER and gross energy yield for two temperate ACSs in Germany under different design scenarios, i.e., tree arrangements (lee- or wind-ward) and ratios of tree area to crop area. Growing short rotation coppice on agricultural land in Germany: a Real Options Approach.
In many cases decision-makers apparently do not adapt as fast as expected to changing economic conditions. This is also the case for the conversion of farm land to short rotation coppice. From anExpand

Based on previous experiences with the cultivation of short Rotation Coppice in Germany, the present article deals with the profitability of tree-plantations for bio-energy generation. The productionExpand
Short-rotation plantations of balsam poplars, aspen and willows on former arable land in the Federal Republic of Germany. I. Site–growth relationships
TLDR
The balsam poplar Muhle Larsen proved to be the most interesting species tested and seems to be well supplied with nutrients for optimal growth and does not need any fertilization or pesticide treatment for at least 10–15 years. Expand
Production and ecological aspects of short rotation poplars in Sweden
Poplars (Populus sp.) are widely used in short rotation forestry for production of biomass for bioenergy, fibre and environmental services. Swedish short rotation forestry is based on Salix sp., andExpand
Short-rotation plantations of balsam poplars, aspen and willows on former arable land in the Federal Republic of Germany. II. Nutritional status and bioelement export by harvested shoot axes
TLDR
The foliar nutrient levels in combination with the results of the fertilization trial, in terms of biomass yield, clearly show the balsam poplars and the aspen to be well supplied with all macronutrients on all sites, independently ofThe fertilization regimes. Expand
Biomass production of 17 poplar clones in a short-rotation coppice culture on a waste disposal site and its relation to soil characteristics
TLDR
A principal component analysis and multiple regression could not reveal an unambiguous impact of soil either, caused by the low variance in soil characteristics, the high genotypic variation and/or the impact of non-identified (environmental) factors. Expand
