Discourse about social studies education and the discursive practices by which it is generated will be explicated in order to analyze what counts as knowledge in—and the power relations which structure—that discursive arena. The argument will be made that knowledge and power interpenetrate and act to produce and reproduce each other. Some of the specific ways this works in social studies education will then be shown.
