The structure of Langmuir plasma waves carrying a finite orbital angular momentum is revised in the paraxial approximation. It is shown that the kinetic effects related to higher-order momenta of the electron distribution function lead to coupling of Laguerre-Gaussian modes and result in a modification of the wave dispersion and damping. The theoretical analysis is compared to the three-dimensional particle-in-cell numerical simulations for a mode with orbital momentum l=2. It is demonstrated…

Nonlinear Landau damping of plasma waves with orbital angular momentum.

We present, using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, an observation that orbital angular momentum (OAM) is transferred to resonant electrons proportionally to longitudinal momentum when

Twisted Kinetic Plasma Waves

Similarly to electromagnetic waves, plasma waves can also carry an orbital angular momentum. A key distinction from electromagnetic waves is that plasma waves are intrinsically coupled to electrons

Kinetic description of electron plasma waves with orbital angular momentum

We describe the kinetic theory of electron plasma waves with orbital angular momentum or twisted plasmons. The conditions for a twisted Landau resonance to exist are established, and this concept is

Plasmons with orbital angular momentum

Electron plasma waves carrying orbital angular momentum are investigated in an unmagnetized collisionless plasma composed of inertial electrons and static ions. For this purpose, the usual plasmon

Electron non-linearities in Langmuir waves with application to beat-wave experiments

Non-linear Langmuir waves are examined in the context of the heat-wave accelerator. With a background of immobile ions the waves in one dimension are subject to the relativistic non-linearity of

Magnetic Field Generation in Plasma Waves Driven by Copropagating Intense Twisted Lasers.

This new method of magnetic field creation in underdense plasmas driven by the beating of two, copropagating, Laguerre-Gaussian orbital angular momentum laser pulses with different frequencies and also different twist indices may find applications in charged beam collimation and microscale pinch.

Orbital angular momentum of light and the transformation of Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes.

Optical Control of the Topology of Laser-Plasma Accelerators.

This work proposes a twisted plasma accelerator capable of generating relativistic electron vortex beams with helical current profiles, and finds that these light springs can rotate as they excite the twisted plasma wakefield, providing a new mechanism to control the twisted wakefield phase velocity and enhance energy gain and trapping efficiency beyond planar wakefields.
