We present a detailed analysis of the space motions of 1203 solar-neighborhood stars with metal abundances [Fe/H] ≤ -0.6, on the basis of a catalog, of metal-poor stars selected without kinematic bias recently revised and supplemented by Beers et al. This sample, having available proper motions, radial velocities, and distance estimates for stars with a wide range of metal abundances, is by far the largest such catalog to be assembled to date. We show that the stars in our sample with [Fe/H… Expand
A kinematically selected, metal-poor stellar halo in the ourskirts of M31
We present evidence for a metal-poor, [Fe/H] ~- 1:4,σ = 0.2 dex, stellar halo component detectable at radii from 10 to 70 kpc, in our nearest giant spiral neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy. ThisExpand
Further Evidence of a Merger Origin for the Thick Disk: Galactic Stars along Lines of Sight to Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
The history of the Milky Way is written in the properties of its stellar populations. Here we analyze stars observed as part of surveys of local dwarf spheroidal galaxies, but which from theirExpand
Theories of thick-disk formation can be differentiated by measurements of stellar elemental abundances. We have undertaken a study of metal-poor stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey ofExpand
We present a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of late-type giant stars at mid-Galactic latitudes of (30° < |b| < 60°), designed to probe the properties of this population to distances of ~9Expand
Structure in the motions of the fastest halo stars
We analyzed the catalog published by Beers et al. ( 2000, ApJ, 119, 2866) of 2106 non-kinematically selected metal poor stars in the solar neighborhood, with the goal of quantifying the amount ofExpand
Structure and Kinematics of the Stellar Halos and Thick Disks of the Milky Way Based on Calibration Stars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7
The structure and kinematics of the recognized stellar components of the Milky Way are explored, based on well-determined atmospheric parameters and kinematic quantities for 32360 "calibration stars"Expand
A 10 000 star spectroscopic survey of the thick disc-halo interface: Phase-space sub-structure in the thick disc
We analyse a 10,000 star spectroscopic survey, focused on Galactic thick disk stars typically 2-5 kpc from the Sun, carried out using the AAOmega Spectrograph on the AAT. We develop methods forExpand
Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars - I. Kinematics and metallicity
Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes,Expand
Co-formation of the disc and the stellar halo
Using a large sample of Main Sequence stars with 7-D measurements supplied by Gaia and SDSS, we study the kinematic properties of the local (within ∼10 kpc from the Sun) stellar halo. WeExpand
The Galactic Thick Disk Stellar Abundances
We present first results from a program to measure the chemical abundances of a large (N > 30) sample of thick disk stars with the principal goal of investigating the formation history of theExpand

Kinematics of Metal-poor Stars in the Galaxy. II. Proper Motions for a Large Nonkinematically Selected Sample
We present a revised catalog of 2106 Galactic stars, selected without kinematic bias and with available radial velocities, distance estimates, and metal abundances in the range -4.0 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0.0.Expand
Early Evolution of the Galactic Halo Revealed from Hipparcos Observations of Metal-poor Stars

Chemistry and Kinematics in the Solar Neighborhood: Implications for Stellar Populations and for Galaxy Evolution
The immediate Solar neighborhood should be a fair sample of the local Galaxy. However, the chemical abundance distribution of long-lived disk stars very near the Sun contains a factor of five to tenExpand
Early-type stars in orthogonal halo fields. II: Identification of metal-rich A stars in the halo
