We present the first 3D observations of a diffuse elliptical galaxy (dE). The good quality data (S/N up to 40) reveal the kinematical signature of an embedded stellar disc, reminiscent of what is commonly observed in elliptical galaxies, though similarity of their origins is questionable. Colour map built from Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images confirms the presence of this disc. Its characteristic scale (about 3 arcsec =250 pc) is about a half of galaxy's effective…

Large scale nested stellar discs in NGC 7217
NGC 7217 is an unbarred early-type spiral galaxy having a multisegment exponential light profile and a system of star-forming rings of the unknown origin; it also possesses a circumnuclear gaseous
Stellar population and kinematics of NGC 404
Context. NGC404 is a nearly face-on nearby low-luminosity lenticular galaxy. Probing its characteristics provides a wealth of information on the details of possible evolution processes of dS0
Kinematics and stellar population of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4124
Results of spectroscopic and photometric studies for the locally isolated lenticular galaxy NGC 4124 are presented. A model of the mass distribution consistent with photometric data has been
Formation and evolution of dwarf elliptical galaxies – II. Spatially resolved star formation histories
We present optical Very Large Telescope spectroscopy of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) comparable in mass to NGC 205, and belonging to the Fornax cluster and to nearby groups of galaxies. Using
Observational insights on the origin of giant low surface brightness galaxies
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep
Stellar population constraints on the dark matter content and origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies
We analyse intermediate-resolution Very Large Telescope (VLT) FLAMES/Giraffe spectra of six ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax cluster. We obtained velocity dispersions and stellar
On the origin of bursts in blue compact dwarf galaxies: clues from kinematics and stellar populations
Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) form stars at, for their sizes, extraordinarily high rates. In this paper, we study what triggers this starburst and what is the fate of the galaxy once its gas
PPAK Wide field Integral Field Spectroscopy of NGC 628 – III. Stellar population properties
We present a stellar population analysis of the nearby, face-on, SA(s)c galaxy, NGC628, which is part of the PPAK IFS Nearby Galaxies Survey (PINGS). The data cover a field of view of ~6 arcmin in
NGC 90: a hidden jellyfish galaxy?
We study a peculiar galaxy NGC 90, a pair member of interacting system Arp 65 (NGC 90/93), using the long-slit spectral observations carried out at the Russian 6m telescope BTA and the available SDSS
The Diversity of Thick Galactic Discs
Although thick stellar discs are detected in nearly all edge-on disc galaxies, their formation scenarios still remain a matter of debate. Due to observational difficulties, there is a lack of

A counter-rotating core in the dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 510
Aims. We present optical long-slit spectra of the Virgo dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 510 at high spectral (σ ∼ 30 km s−1) and spatial resolution. The principal aim is to unravel its kinematical and
Stellar Populations of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: UBVRI Photometry of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the
Rotationally Supported Virgo Cluster Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: Stripped Dwarf Irregular Galaxies?
New observations of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Virgo Cluster indicate that at least seven dEs have significant velocity gradients along their optical major axis, with typical rotation
Spectroscopy of dwarf elliptical galaxies in the fornax cluster
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of 10 nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax cluster. The blue spectra of Fornax dE galaxies indicate a wide range of
The ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. VI. Isophotal Analysis and the Structure of Early-Type Galaxies
We present a detailed analysis of the morphology, isophotal parameters, and surface brightness profiles for 100 early-type members of the Virgo Cluster, from dwarfs (MB = -15.1 mag) to giants (MB =
Internal Dynamics, Structure, and Formation of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies. II. Rotating versus Nonrotating Dwarfs
We present spatially resolved internal kinematics and stellar chemical abundances for a sample of dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster observed with the Keck telescope and Echelle
Old Stellar Populations. VI. Absorption-Line Spectra of Galaxy Nuclei and Globular Clusters
We present absorption-line strengths on the Lick/IDS line-strength system of 381 galaxies and 38 globular clusters in the 4000-6400 Å region. All galaxies were observed at Lick Observatory between
The Dynamics of the Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy FS 76: Bridging the Kinematic Dichotomy between Elliptical and Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies

Morphological evolution of discs in clusters
The recent discovery of hidden non-axisymmetric and disc-like structures in bright Virgo dwarf elliptical and lenticular galaxies (dE/dSph/dS0) indicates that they may have late-type progenitors.

The rotation curve, up to 0/sup prime/.6 from the center, has been derived from Ca ii H and K lines for the elliptical galaxy NGC 4697. A maximum seems to be reached at 15'' with 65 km s$sup -1$. The
