Collaborative robots should ideally use low torque actuators for passive safety reasons. However, some applications require these collaborative robots to reach deep into confined spaces while assisting a human operator in physically demanding tasks. In this paper, we consider the use of in-situ collaborative robots (ISCRs) that balance the conflicting demands of passive safety dictating low torque actuation and the need to reach into deep confined spaces. We consider the judicious use of…

Passive Compliance Control of Redundant Serial Manipulators
- EngineeringJournal of Mechanisms and Robotics
- 2018
This paper presents an effective method for simultaneously attaining the desired end-effector position and end-Effector elastic behavior by tracking a desired variation in both the position and the compliance.
Exploitation of Environment Support Contacts for Manipulation Effort Reduction of a Robot Arm
- Engineering2019 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)
- 2019
The possibility of actively utilizing the environment for a non-end-effector support contact towards reducing the joints efforts during manipulation tasks is explored by the proposed control scheme with a three-level hierarchical compliance controller.
A method for the design of hybrid position/Force controllers for manipulators constrained by contact with the environment
- EngineeringProceedings. 1985 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation
- 1985
A new method for the design of hybrid position/force controllers for constrained manipulators is derived. This method can be applied to all types of constraint due to contact with the environmcnt;…

The Kinetostatic Optimization of Robotic Manipulators: The Inverse and the Direct Problems
- Computer Science
- 2006
The concept of homogeneous space is introduced in order to relieve the designer from the concept of characteristic length, and the application of the concept to the design and kinetostatic performance evaluation of serial robots is illustrated with examples.

- EngineeringProceedings 1999 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (Cat. No.99CH36288C)
- 1999
Presents a general first-order kinematic model of frictionless rigid-body contact for use in hybrid force/motion control and shows a manipulation that involves controlling the force in two separate face-vertex contacts while performing motion.
