The lack of sensitivity to killer activity among isolates of the genus Candida suggests that their toxins belong to the same killer type, and differentiation of species within the C. parapsilosis complex using the killer system may be feasible if a more taxonomically diverse panel of killer strains is employed.

Yeasts of the Georgian honeysuckle (Lonicera iberica) and grapes (Vitis vinifera) in Dagestan

The structure of yeast communities of endemic to the Caucasus Georgian honeysuckle in comparison with grapes, a traditional agricultural crop of the republic, has been studied in the territory of Dagestan, showing the perspective of studying yeast communities of endemic plants.

Assessing methods for mitigating fungal contamination in freshwater mussel in vitro propagation

The findings suggest that low contamination results in high probability for transformation success; however, there is a tradeoff in higher concentrations of Amphotericin B, suggesting toxicity at higher concentrations.

Effect of Bacterial and Yeast Starters on the Formation of Volatile and Organic Acid Compounds in Coffee Beans and Selection of Flavors Markers Precursors During Wet Fermentation

Yeast starters were better producers of volatile alcohols and bacterial starters of acid compounds and the selection of potential flavor marker precursors, such as heptadecanol, 4-hydroxy-2-methylacetophenone, 7-methyl-4-octanol, and guaiacol, was allowed.

MTL genotypes, phenotypic switching, and susceptibility profiles of Candida parapsilosis species group compared to Lodderomyces elongisporus

Results demonstrated phenotypic switching of C. parapsilosis CBS 2315 and that FLC and FK506 represent a promising drug combination against C. albicans and L. elongisporus.

Kinetic modelling and optimisation of antimicrobial compound production by Candida pyralidae KU736785 for control of Candida guilliermondii

The inhibition of Candida guilliermondii, a common fermented beverage spoilage organism, was achieved using antimicrobial compounds produced by Candida pyralidae KU736785 using response surface methodology.

Biology of Killer Yeast and Technological Implications

Recent developments on biological and technological implications of killer yeasts are presented, which suggest that yeast killer phenomenon may play a substantive role in stabilizing the ecosystem.

Antagonistic Interactions and Killer Yeasts

Release of killer toxins might benefit both the toxin producer and the selfish genetic element in the producer cell, so as to provide a positive selection mechanism for the genetic system encoding both toxin and immunity.

Occurrence of killer yeasts in isolates of clinical origin.

Secretion of killer toxins could represent at least partially, an advantage against other candida and non-Candida strains in the colonization process, especially for uncommon Candida species.

Differentiation of Candida dubliniensis from Candida albicans with the use of killer toxins.

The aim of this study was to report the ability of killer toxins, previously used as biotyping techniques, as a new tool to differentiate C. albicans from C. dubliniensis. The susceptibility of C.

Biotyping of Malassezia pachydermatis strains using the killer system.

The growth inhibition of the 30 strains of M. pachydermatis due to the effect of the killer yeasts used permitted the determination of the following biotypes: 888, 212 and 111, which occurred most frequently in both ear canal and skin samples.

Molecular characterization and antifungal susceptibility of the Candida parapsilosis species complex of clinical isolates from Monterrey, Mexico.

Clinical isolates from Monterrey, Mexico were re-identified and Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto was the most frequent species, and was the only one which showed resistance to antifungals.

Occurrence of killer Candida glabrata clinical isolates

It was found that the killer activity presented by all isolates was resistant to every pH and temperature tested, although optimal activity was found at a range of pH values from 4 to 7 and at 37°C.

Prospective Multicenter Study of the Epidemiology, Molecular Identification, and Antifungal Susceptibility of Candida parapsilosis, Candida orthopsilosis, and Candida metapsilosis Isolated from Patients with Candidemia

This study confirms the different prevalence of C. parapsilosis complex candidemia among age groups: neither C. orthopsilosis nor C. metapsilotic was isolated from adults and the elderly, and the disparity in antifungal susceptibility among species could be important for therapy.

The use of killer sensitivity patterns for biotyping yeast strains: the state of the art, potentialities and limitations.

The use of the killer sensitivity pattern (KSP) as a biotyping tool is discussed and compared with some currently used DNA-based procedures and the methodological, mechanistic and ecological implications are evaluated.

Therapeutic Activity of an Engineered Synthetic Killer Antiidiotypic Antibody Fragment against Experimental Mucosal and Systemic Candidiasis

KP is the first engineered peptide derived from a recombinant IdAb retaining KT microbicidal activity, probably through the interaction with the β-glucan KT receptor on target microbial cells, and was therefore designated killer peptide (KP).

Killer toxins of clinically important yeasts

In this review information on killer toxins produced by clinically important yeasts of the genera Candida, Cryptococcus and Rhodotorula is systematized.
