The morphology and systematics of clam shrimps is described followed by a key to genera. Each genus is treated, including diagnostic features, list of species with distributions, and references provided to papers with keys or if these are not available preliminary keys to species within that genus are included.

This study reviews the distribution of clam shrimps in South Africa by reviewing published distribution records and contributing novel data from surveys in the Northern Cape, finding that 13 of the 18 species from the sub-region occur inSouth Africa, of which four are restricted to their respective provinces.

Investigation of the pattern of ornamentation in extant branchiopods—including differences resulting from sexual dimorphism—in order to assess its value for branchiopod taxonomy finds out that some taxa indeed display sexually dimorphic ornamentations, but their basic ornamentation patterns or combinations are stable within each species so they do not significantly influence the taxonomic identification.
