Recent in vivo studies demonstrated that aging gastric mucosa has impaired angiogenesis and reduced expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Angiogenesis is triggered by hypoxia and VEGF gene activation, and the latter requires transport of transcription factor(s) into endothelial cell nuclei.
