Abstract A survey of chromosome numbers of amphipods is presented on the basis of literature data and new observations. Chromosomes of8 amphipod species have been investigated: Aora gracilis (n = 4, 2n = 8); Atylus swammerdamei (n = 12, 2n = 24); Jassa marmorata (n = 6, 2n = 12); Lembos websteri (n = 18, 2n = 36); Halirages fulvocinctus (2n = 32); Haustorius arenarius (n = 20, 2n = 40); Hyale prevosti (n = 25); Hyperia galba (2n = 126).
