The cladoceran Daphnia middendorffiana is an arctic species able to produce winter eggs which develop parthenogenetically. The cytological study of the maturation of summer and winter eggs of an italian population of this species has shown that both types of eggs undergo only one maturation division of equational type with the expulsion of only one diploid polar body, the same maturation process as had been found in the pseudosexual eggs of a race of Daphnia pulex (Schrader, 1925).—The… Expand
Geographical Parthenogenesis and Polyploidy in Daphnia pulex
TLDR
The results suggest that geographical patterns in the distribution of parthenogens arise from indirect rather than direct selection for shifts in the breeding system, and supports the view that polyploidy is selected for in extreme environments. Expand
THE AMERICAN NATURALIST OBLIGATE ASEXUALITY IN DAPHNIA Most species of Daphnia reproduce via cyclical parthenogenesis
  • 2010
Most species of Daphnia reproduce via cyclical parthenogenesis. Individual females of such species are able to produce both parthenogenetic and sexual eggs. The parthenogenetic eggs are producedExpand
Formation and structure of the ephippium (resting egg case) in relation to molting and egg laying in the water flea Daphnia pulex De Geer (Cladocera: Daphniidae)
TLDR
The structure and formation of the ephippium in the water flea Daphnia pulex De Geer (Cladocera: Daphniidae) is examined by stereomicroscopy, histology, and scanning electron microscopy to clarify key transitions in the formation of resting eggs. Expand
Chromosome numbers of nine species of Daphniidae (Crustacea, Cladocera)
The chromosome numbers were taken from metaphase plates of the single (equational) meiotic division in parthenogenetic eggs (Mortimer, 1936). The squash method used (Zaffagnini & SabeUi, 1972)Expand
Influence of parthenogenetic reproduction on the genotypic constitution and evolutionary success of populations and species
TLDR
Forms in which the sexual process and diapause are rare (or species which are represented by parthenogenetic populations in one part of their area and by bisexual ones in another) demonstrate the most significant differences between clonal and panmictic populations. Expand
Abortive meiosis in the oogenesis of parthenogenetic Daphnia pulex
TLDR
The objective of this research was to precisely reveal the process and mechanism of parthenogenetic oogenesis and maintenance of diploidy in Daphnia pulex through histology, karyology, and immunohistochemistry and to hypothesize that D. pules switches reproductive mode depending on whether the egg is fertilized or not. Expand
How Does the Alteration of Meiosis Evolve to Parthenogenesis?- Case Study in a Water Flea, Daphnia pulex -
TLDR
D. pulex is developed as an experimental model for studying oogenesis and developmental mechanisms during evolution and develops a reproductive strategy utilizing ‘parthenogenesis’, which has high reproductive power, and ‘sexual reproduction”, which generates genetic diversity, in response to different environments. Expand
Genetic variation and evolutionary relationships within four species of Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera)
TLDR
The most striking aspect of the data was the high degree of genetic differentiation within Daphnia species, which proved lowest in populations inhabiting northern marginal habitats and the very highest value was found in D. magna, which mainly inhabits small temporary ponds. Expand
Lowered female reproductive effort as an indicator for increased male production and sexuality in Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera)
TLDR
Female reproductive effort was found to decline before a significant production of males and sexual eggs takes place in the cyclically parthenogenetic Daphnia magna, and the adaptivity of ESD is discussed. Expand
Environmentally controlled phenotypic plasticity of morphology and polypeptide expression in two populations of Daphnia pulex (Crustacea: cladocera)
TLDR
Evidence for the existence of environmentally induced switching between alternate developmental programs is found in two local Daphnia pulex populations which are subject to different types of seasonally varying predation pressures. Expand

The restriction of population growth to one brood of young in the warmer pool and colder lake is used to illustrate the hypothesis that arctic temperature influences productivity by controlling life cycle rather than by restricting rates of metabolism. Expand

PHOTOPERIOD CONTROL OF DIAPAUSE IN DAPHNIA. II. INDUCTION OF WINTER DIAPAUSE IN THE ARCTIC

Control of the sexual polymorphism leading to an embryonic diapause was studied in an arctic population of Daphnia middendorffiana, finding that control may be partially overridden in long days (constant light) by density of culture. Expand

The large sequence divergence among its 34 North American members indicates that the genus Daphnia originated during the Mesozoic, even though many lineages exhibit extreme morphological stasis. Expand
