The traditional green algal genus Chlorella, which comprised coccoid algae surrounded by a smooth cell wall and reproducing solely by autosporulation, has proved to be polyphyletic and extremely diverse in phylogenetic terms. We studied a new subaerial Chlorella‐like strain CAUP H7901 and morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular phylogenetic investigations indicated that it represents a new lineage of the trebouxiophycean Watanabea clade, dissimilar from other members of this group. This study provides a detailed characterization of two strains of microalgae isolated from tree bark in the Mediterranean, described as representatives of a novel species in a new genus, Leptochlorella corticola gen. et sp.

Polulichloris henanensis gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a novel subaerial coccoid green alga

Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicated that this coccoid green alga represents a new lineage of the Watanabea clade (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) and is described as a new genus and species, Polulichloris henanensis, gen. et sp.

Hylodesmus singaporensis gen. et sp. nov., a new autosporic subaerial green alga (Scenedesmaceae, Chlorophyta) from Singapore.

The results establish that the strain identified is a novel, previously undocumented, evolutionary lineage of scenedesmacean algae necessitating its description as a new species in a new genus.

Obliquicauda gen. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), including O. inflata sp. nov. and O. apiculata sp. nov.: foliicolous algae from Ficus leaves

Morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular phylogenetic investigations of two unidentified foliicolous algal strains in a tropical rainforest of China indicated that they differ from each other but cluster together and represent a new lineage of Trebouxiophyceae in the Choricystis/Botryococcus clade.

Lunachloris lukesovae gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a novel coccoid green alga isolated from soil in South Bohemia, Czech Republic

The phylogenetic position, morphology and ultrastructure of the strain CCALA 307 previously identified as Coccomyxa cf.

Chloropyrula uraliensis gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a new green coccoid alga with a unique ultrastructure, isolated from soil in South Urals

An interesting coccoid green alga isolated from a soil sample from a forest‐steppe in South Urals (Bashkortostan, Russia) is described that appears to represent a new phylogenetic lineage related to the genus Leptosira within the class Trebouxiophyceae.

Phyllosiphon duini sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a Species Isolated from a Corticolous Phototrophic Biofilm

Data demonstrate that the genus Phyllosiphon represents a diverse phylogenetic lineage within the subaerial chlorelloid green microalgae of the Watanabea clade.

Planktochlorella nurekis gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a novel coccoid green alga carrying significant biotechnological potential.

Phylogenetic position, morphology and ultrastructure were investigated for biotechnologically remarkable strain Chlorella vulgaris IFR C-111, utilized in various commercial applications and pointed to the poor phylogenetic signal in generally utilized SSU and ITS rDNA data and the need of sequencing other molecular markers.

A novel species in the genus Heveochlorella (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) witnesses the evolution from an epiphytic into an endophytic lifestyle in tree-dwelling green algae

Both an epiphytic and an endophytic lifestyle of tree-dwelling green algae can be observed in the genus Heveochlorella, and H. hainangensis is treated as a novel species.

Pseudomarvania, gen. nov. (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae), a new genus for "budding" subaerial green algae Marvania aerophytica NEUSTUPA et ŠEJNOHOVÁ and Stichococcus ampulliformis HANDA.

It is demonstrated that M. aerophytica is unrelated to other species of the genus Marvania, but together with S. ampulliformis forms a lineage within a broader clade comprising also Species of the order Prasiolales, Desmococcus spp.

Morphology and phylogenetic position of a trebouxiophycean green alga (Chlorophyta) growing on the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis , with the description of a new genus and species

A novel unicellular Chlorella-like green alga was isolated from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and based on morphological features and phylogenetic position, a new genus Heveochlorella gen. nov. is proposed.

Phylogenetic relationship of Chlorella and Parachlorella gen. nov. (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae)

It was shown that morphological criteria traditionally used for classification in Chlorellaceae are burdened with a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, which represents adaptations to environmental factors in order to optimize floating in the water column and to resist grazing pressure.

Phylogenetic analysis of the ‘Nannochloris-like’ algae and diagnoses of Picochlorum oklahomensis gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta)

It is shown with 1 8S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence phylogeny that 19 of 22 isolates previously assigned to either Nannochloris or Nanochlorum fall within a diverse sister clade to a clade including the four ‘true’ Chlorella species sensu lato, supporting retention of Koliella, Gloeotila, Marvania and Nann Cochloris as distinct genera.

MARINICHLORELLA KAISTIAE GEN. ET SP. NOV. (TREBOUXIOPHYCEAE, CHLOROPHYTA) BASED ON POLYPHASIC TAXONOMY 1

Three coccoid green algal strains belonging to a new genus and species are described and a new taxon, Marinichlorella kaistiae, is proposed, to describe these strains and classify them in the family Chlorellaceae.

PHYLOGENETIC POSITION OF KOLIELLA (CHLOROPHYTA) AS INFERRED FROM NUCLEAR AND CHLOROPLAST SMALL SUBUNIT rDNA

The phylogenetic position of Koliella, a chlorophyte characterized by Klebsormidium type cell division, was inferred from analyses of partial 18S r DNA and partial 16S rDNA, and high decay indices and bootstrap values supported high affinity for Trebouxiophyceae, however, the genus appeared to be polyphyletic.

Systematics of Coccoid Green Algae: Morphology vs. 18S rRNA Gene Phylogeny

It is shown that the morphology of cells as well as the formation of coenobia, spines, mucilage and incrustations cannot be used to separate genera in coccoid green algae.

A taxonomic study of two Stichococcus species (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) with a starch-enveloped pyrenoid

Investigation of the morphology, ultrastructure and 18S rDNA molecular phylogeny of a green algal strain and a similar new strain isolated from Southeast Asia revealed that the two strains are unrelated to the charophycean genus Klebsormidium and belong to the trebouxiophy Ocean genus Stichococcus, despite the presence of a pyrenoid with a conspicuous starch envelope.

BIOCHEMICAL TAXONOMY AND MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY OF THE GENUS CHLORELLA SENSU LATO (CHLOROPHYTA)

It is proposed that only four species should be kept in the genus Chlorella (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae), and these taxa can easily be recognized by the production of secondary carotenoids under nitrogen‐deficient conditions.

Reconsideration of the taxonomy of ellipsoidal species of Chlorella (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), with establishment of Watanabea sen. nov.

In the absence of any existing genus that includes Chlorella‐like algae with a simple cell wall, no pyrenoid, and two forms of mature cells and autospores, a new genus, Watanabea, is proposed with the type species W. reniformis.
