The traditional green algal genus Chlorella, which comprised coccoid algae surrounded by a smooth cell wall and reproducing solely by autosporulation, has proved to be polyphyletic and extremely diverse in phylogenetic terms. The phylogenetic position of Koliella, a chlorophyte characterized by Klebsormidium type cell division, was inferred from analyses of partial 18S r DNA and partial 16S rDNA, and high decay indices and bootstrap values supported high affinity for Trebouxiophyceae, however, the genus appeared to be polyphyletic.

A taxonomic study of two Stichococcus species (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) with a starch-enveloped pyrenoid

Investigation of the morphology, ultrastructure and 18S rDNA molecular phylogeny of a green algal strain and a similar new strain isolated from Southeast Asia revealed that the two strains are unrelated to the charophycean genus Klebsormidium and belong to the trebouxiophy Ocean genus Stichococcus, despite the presence of a pyrenoid with a conspicuous starch envelope.


It is proposed that only four species should be kept in the genus Chlorella (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae), and these taxa can easily be recognized by the production of secondary carotenoids under nitrogen‐deficient conditions.
