We present improved atmospheric parameters of nearby white dwarfs lying within 20 pc of the Sun. The aim of the current study is to obtain the best statistical model of the least-biased sample of the white dwarf population. A homogeneous analysis of the local population is performed combining detailed spectroscopic and photometric analyses based on improved model atmosphere calculations for various spectral types including DA, DB, DC, DQ, and DZ stars. The spectroscopic technique is applied to… Expand
On the Measurement of Fundamental Parameters of White Dwarfs in the Gaia Era
We present a critical review of the determination of fundamental parameters of white dwarfs discovered by the Gaia mission. We first reinterpret color-magnitude and color-color diagrams usingExpand
Measurements of Physical Parameters of White Dwarfs: A Test of the Mass-Radius Relation
We present a detailed spectroscopic and photometric analysis of 219 DA and DB white dwarfs for which trigonometric parallax measurements are available. Our aim is to compare the physical parametersExpand
Gaia photometry for white dwarfs
Context. White dwarfs can be used to study the structure and evolution of the Galaxy by analysing their luminosity function and initial mass function. Among them, the very cool white dwarfs provideExpand
TOWARD A SPECTROSCOPIC CENSUS OF WHITE DWARFS WITHIN 40 pc OF THE SUN
We present the preliminary results of a survey aimed at significantly increasing the range and completeness of the local census of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs. The current census ofExpand
Analysis of Helium-rich White Dwarfs Polluted by Heavy Elements in the Gaia Era
We present a homogeneous analysis of 1023 DBZ/DZ(A) and 319 DQ white dwarf stars taken from the Montreal White Dwarf Database. This represents a significant increase over the previous comprehensiveExpand
The field white dwarf mass distribution
We revisit the properties and astrophysical implications of the field white dwarf mass distribution in preparation of Gaia applications. Our study is based on the two samples with the bestExpand
Physical Properties of the Current Census of Northern White Dwarfs within 40 pc of the Sun
We present a detailed description of the physical properties of our current census of white dwarfs within 40 pc of the Sun, based on an exhaustive spectroscopic survey of northern hemisphereExpand
Spectroscopic and photometric studies of white dwarfs in the Hyades
The Hyades cluster is known to harbour ten so-called classical white dwarf members. Numerous studies through the years have predicted that more than twice this amount of degenerate stars should beExpand
The white dwarf population within 40 pc of the Sun
© 2016 ESO. Context. The white dwarf luminosity function is an important tool to understand the properties of the solar neighborhood, like its star formation history, and its age. Aims. Here weExpand
White Dwarf Cosmochronology in the Solar Neighborhood
The study of the stellar formation history in the solar neighborhood is a powerful technique to recover information about the early stages and evolution of the Milky Way. We present a new method thatExpand
