We present improved atmospheric parameters of nearby white dwarfs lying within 20 pc of the Sun. The aim of the current study is to obtain the best statistical model of the least-biased sample of the white dwarf population. A homogeneous analysis of the local population is performed combining detailed spectroscopic and photometric analyses based on improved model atmosphere calculations for various spectral types including DA, DB, DC, DQ, and DZ stars. The spectroscopic technique is applied to…
On the Measurement of Fundamental Parameters of White Dwarfs in the Gaia Era
We present a critical review of the determination of fundamental parameters of white dwarfs discovered by the Gaia mission. We first reinterpret color–magnitude and color–color diagrams using
Measurements of Physical Parameters of White Dwarfs: A Test of the Mass–Radius Relation
We present a detailed spectroscopic and photometric analysis of 219 DA and DB white dwarfs for which trigonometric parallax measurements are available. Our aim is to compare the physical parameters
Gaia photometry for white dwarfs
Context. White dwarfs can be used to study the structure and evolution of the Galaxy by analysing their luminosity function and initial mass function. Among them, the very cool white dwarfs provide
A New Generation of Cool White Dwarf Atmosphere Models. IV. Revisiting the Spectral Evolution of Cool White Dwarfs
As a result of competing physical mechanisms, the atmospheric composition of white dwarfs changes throughout their evolution, a process known as spectral evolution. Because of the ambiguity of their
A Spectroscopic Search for White Dwarf Companions to 101 Nearby M Dwarfs
Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20 pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main-sequence companions. Detecting these
Analysis of Helium-rich White Dwarfs Polluted by Heavy Elements in the Gaia Era
We present an analysis of 1023 DBZ/DZ(A) and 319 DQ white dwarf stars taken from the Montreal White Dwarf Database. This represents a significant increase over the previous comprehensive studies on
Spectroscopic and photometric studies of white dwarfs in the Hyades
The Hyades cluster is known to harbour ten so-called classical white dwarf members. Numerous studies through the years have predicted that more than twice this amount of degenerate stars should be
The white dwarf population within 40 pc of the Sun
© 2016 ESO. Context. The white dwarf luminosity function is an important tool to understand the properties of the solar neighborhood, like its star formation history, and its age. Aims. Here we
A New Generation of Cool White Dwarf Atmosphere Models. I. Theoretical Framework and Applications to DZ Stars
The photospheres of the coolest helium-atmosphere white dwarfs are characterized by fluidlike densities. Under those conditions, standard approximations used in model atmosphere codes are no longer
Distant White Dwarfs in the US Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station Parallax Sample
This paper presents new trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for 214 stars. The measurements were made at the US Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station between 1989 and 2017, and the average

A detailed analysis of 32 of the 38 halo white dwarf candidates identified by Oppenheimer et al. is presented, based on model atmosphere fits to observed energy distributions built from optical BVRI
Photometric and Spectroscopic Analysis of Cool White Dwarfs with Trigonometric Parallax Measurements
A detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of cool (Teff ≲ 12,000 K) white dwarf stars is presented. The sample has been drawn from the Yale Parallax Catalog and from a proper motion survey in
