The problem of computing the characters of the finite dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n) over C was solved a few years ago by V. Serganova [28], after various special cases had been treated in [18, 4, 9, 3, 29, 13, 14, 19, 27]. In this article, we present an entirely different approach.
