The radiation belts of both Earth and Jupiter were discovered nearly simultaneously during the late 1950s. In the terrestrial case, the discovery of radiation belts followed the launch of Explorer 1 in 1958 (Van Allen 1959). The equivalent radiation belts at Jupiter were serendipitously discov. ered after the detection of bursts of jovian radio emission in the decametric wavelength band by Burke and Franklin in 1955.
