This paper takes up the lens of Queer Theory to re-examine the Joseph story, as told in the Bible and as interpreted in rabbinic sources. It also looks at the way this reading relates to four modern works that re-imagine Joseph: Franz Kafka’s “Josephine the Singer, or: the Mouse Folk,” Nurit Zarchi’s “She is Joseph (Hi Yosef), and Esther Ettinger’s “A Wire Ladder” (Sulam shel tayil) and “Poem before Sleep” (Hashir shelifnei hasheinah).
