This study analyses the temperature and precipitation dependence among stations in the Mediterranean. The first station group is located in the eastern Mediterranean (EM) and includes two stations, Athens and Thessaloniki, while the western (WM) one includes Malaga and Barcelona. The data was organized in two time periods, the hot-dry period and the cold-wet one, composed of 5 months, respectively. The analysis is based on a new statistical technique in climatology: the Copula method. Firstly…
Bias Correction of Climate Model’s Precipitation Using the Copula Method and Its Application in River Basin Simulation
During the last few decades, the utilization of the data from climate models in hydrological studies has increased as they can provide data in the regions that lack raw meteorological information.
Characterizing the temperature and precipitation covariability over Canada
Changes in the regional characteristics of temperature and precipitation can intensify the occurrence and severity of extreme events such as rain-on-snow-induced flooding, droughts and wildfires.
Copulas for hydroclimatic applications – A practical note on common misconceptions and pitfalls
TLDR
A practical approach to copula-based modeling is illustrated, which provides end-users with an overview of necessary requirements, statistical assumptions and consequential limitations of copulas, highlights possible pitfalls and misconceptions, and offers a decision support framework for the application ofcopulas to support researchers and decision makers in addressing climatological hazards and sustainable development, thereby demystifying what is currently an area of great confusion.
A Continuous Drought Probability Monitoring System, CDPMS, Based on Copulas
The standardized precipitation index (SPI), is one of the most used drought indices. However, it is difficult to use to monitor the ongoing drought characteristics because it cannot be expeditiously
Revealing alarming changes in spatial coverage of joint hot and wet extremes across India
TLDR
It is revealed that extremes of any single variable, i.e. either precipitation or temperature, do not manifest such an alarming spatial expansion/contraction, which indicates that the consideration of the joint indices of hydroclimatic variables is more informative for the climate change impact analysis.
Copula-Based Multivariate Frequency Analysis of the 2012–2018 Drought in Northeast Brazil
The 2012–2018 drought was such an extreme event in the drought-prone area of Northeast Brazil that it triggered a discussion about proactive drought management. This paper aims at understanding the
Development in Copula Applications in Forestry and Environmental Sciences
TLDR
This chapter reviews the literature on the types of copula models, including Gumbel, Clayton, and vine, and outlines the theoretical development of mixture bivariate and multivariate copula distributions.
Importance of Weather Conditions in a Flight Corridor
Current research initiatives, such as the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research Program, call for an air traffic system with improved safety and efficiency records and environmental
On Entropy of Probability Integral Transformed Time Series
TLDR
The goal of this paper is to investigate the changes of entropy estimates when the amplitude distribution of the time series is equalized using the probability integral transformation, and derived an expression for the reference value of entropy in the probabilities integral transformed signals.
