John Ambrose Fleming was born at Lancaster on 29 November 1849, the eldest of seven children. His father was the Rev. James Fleming, D.D., who was minister of High Street Congregational Chapel, Lancaster, from August 1845 to September 1853. He died in London in November 1879, aged sixty-four. The son has stated that his father came of ‘a long line of Scotch ancestors of Flemish origin’ and was born at Kelso.
