  • At the turn of the twentieth century in New York City’s Skin and Cancer Hospital, 37-yr-old James Tayloe Gwathmey began a rotating internship studying medicine, chest conditions, and infectious diseases. Gwathmey was the third of six sons of William Watts and Mary Lavinia Tayloe Gwathmey. The Virginia Gwathrneys were descended from Owen Gwathmey, the only one of his family to flee Wales in the 1600s to King County, Virginia.
