THE GERMAN PHYSICIST Johann Salomo Christoph Schweigger (1779-1857) occupies an important place in the natural sciences of his time, especially through his theory of matter, an alternative to the Daltonian atomic theory. He studied archaeology, mathematics, and natural sciences at the university of his native town, Erlangen.
