The concept of Six Degrees of Separation has been formalized in so-called ‘small-world networks’. The principles involved could be of use in settings as diverse as improving networks of cellular phones and understanding the spread of infections.

Figures and Topics from this paper

Oh, What a Tangled Web … Complex Networks in Ecology
TLDR
Ecosystems are really interconnected networks of many kinds, so changed conditions in one network can affect the entire ecosystem, and one example of this was the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park, which initiated a trophic cascade that transformed the landscape. Expand
Capacity Analysis in Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Cognitive Radio Networks: A Small World Perspective
TLDR
This paper proposes a new method of shortcut creation for CRNs, which is based on connectivity ratio, and derives the capacity of SRN based on small world model over multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) environment. Expand
Networks for the Future: A Mathematical Network Analysis of the Partnership Data for Sustainable Development Goals
This research project analyzes the Partnership Data for Sustainable Development Goals to determine geographical coverage of the projects as well as the relationships of project proponents working inExpand
Analysis of Cluster Damages in Network Systems
Abstract Changes in the functional characteristics of a multicommodity network with cluster architecture of the logical links depending on damages of edges of its physical topology graph are studied.Expand
Emerging small-world referral networks in evolutionary labor markets
TLDR
Analysis reveals that the loss of global fitness is driven by an increase in individual robustness, which allows agents to live longer by surviving job losses, and the behavior of the model suggests predictions for a number of policies. Expand
"Small-World" Networks of Mobile Robots
TLDR
A new form of coupled systems called “small-world” networks, used to successfully describe the interactions of systems that can be highly clustered, like regular lattices, yet have small characteristic path lengths like random graphs, are described. Expand
A Genetic Simulated Annealing Algorithm to Optimize the Small-World Network Generating Process
TLDR
This paper proposes a genetic simulated annealing (GSA) algorithm to improve the efficiency of transforming other kinds of networks into small-world networks by adding edges, and applies this algorithm to some experimental systems. Expand
Dynamics of Research Team Formation in Complex Networks
TLDR
This paper studies the dynamics of team formation in large research communities in which knowledge of individuals plays an important role on team performance and individual utility, and proposes an agent-based model. Expand
Assessing Connections in an Agricultural Community Using Social Network Analysis
TLDR
The structure of agricultural organization connections within six states in the western U.S. is understood, including how different types of organizations connect to one another, and specifically where the High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (HICAHS) is positioned in the agricultural organization network. Expand
President ’ s Lecture : Human Nutrient Requirements : The Challenge of the Post-Genome Era 1
It is a privilege to be the 2001 Wilbur O. Atwater lecturer for many reasons. Important among these is the fact that I join an impressive list of distinguished previous lecturers, many of whom are myExpand
