We have recently reported the use of the highly selective and reversible binding of the potent bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) to target Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) for its isolation from crude extracts of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). We now report the use of the same procedure for the purification from rabbit PMN of BPI and also of a novel 15-kDa species that consists of two nearly identical isoforms.
