A newly described strain of the genus Methanosarcina was isolated from submarine canyon sediments and is shown by comparative sequence analyses of 16S ribosomal DNA and the gene encoding methyl coenzyme M reductase, mcrI, to be a strain of Methanosarcina siciliae.
