IN Japan, Vibrio parahaemolyticus has been reported to be the major cause of gastroenteritis associated with the consumption of sea foods1. V. parahaemolyticus has been shown to occur in large numbers in coastal waters and marine sediments around Japan in summer months, but not in the winter2. This seasonal pattern is also apparent in food poisoning outbreaks due to V. parahaemolyticus3.
