Despite the wide-spread occurrence of Beggiatoa in lake bottoms, stream beds, ponds, sulfur springs and marine habitats, these large, colorless, filamentous organisms have not been investigated extensively. This is probably due, in part, to the apparent difficulty of isolating pure cultures and of maintaining them alive. A number of investigations, however, have been made on impure and pure cultures of Beggiatoa by Wn~OORADSKY (1887, 1888), K E ~ (1912), CAT~Lm (1940) and others. A detailed… CONTINUE READING
